Spöket i Köket distinguishes itself by being the only Scandi-French Canadian crossover Folk Bigband in Scandinavia, consisting of ten young ambitious musicians with different backgrounds in both jazz, classical, rock and folk music. The band’s repertoire consists of old and new songs and tunes from both Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Québec and Cape Breton, ranging from melancholic ballads to feisty polskas and rousing reels.

With a mix of traditional folk instruments like fiddle, wooden flute and accordion, joined by double bass, piano and guitar, and a horn section with saxophones, trumpet and trombone, this band creates a powerful, bombastic sound in the borderland between traditional folk and bigband music.
With twenty instruments played by ten musicians, the energy is high and outgoing and the response is overwhelmingly positive wherever Spöket i Köket is performing.

The band started out in 2015, making a 20-concert tour in four weeks the first summer, and their first record ”Den nya spisen” (The new stove), netted them a nomination for newcomer of the year at the Swedish folk- and world music gala of 2017. April of 2019 saw the release of their second album ”Château du garage”, which not only landed good reviews, and also a nomination for best album at the Danish Music Awards 2019, as well as a nomination to band leader Nisse Blomster for best composer the same year. Finally, the third album, "Kurbits & Flames", a more trad music focused concept album took the world by surprise in september of 2022, and led to both a Manifest prize nomination and a Swedish Grammy nomination.

Since the starting year, Spöket i köket has averaged around 30 concerts a year around Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Germany and Austria, and are currently working on expanding into touring all over Europe and hoping to go overseas to Canada in the future.

2023, which we predict will be a good year, will see the small catastrophony of Spöket i köket, that will leave nobody sitting still or without a smile, go out of our way to reach even farther ut in the world, still simultaneously honoring and disturbing our traditional folk tunes. Join us, at the forefront of Folk music liberation!
